Fight. Flight. Freeze Pt. 2

In our last blog, I introduced 3 default  ways we respond when things happen. These responses are often unconscious and unrehearsed, but have several consequences if we do not raise our awareness or understanding of them .  These reactions are known as FIGHT. FLIGHT. FREEZE.

Below are a few strategies to help us navigate these responses when they appear!

  • KNUCK IF YOU BUCK-At times our default reaction is to FIGHT. This can appear as anger, irritability, or arguing. If you find that you are frequently ready to FIGHT use these CALMING  techniques to bring down your fight response: monitor your body for tension, drink a sip of water, and BREATHE.

  • TAKE OFF- There are other times where you may find yourself ready to RUN from situations that appear beyond your control. Your mind instantly fills itself with anxiety and you want to ESCAPE. If this is you, engage in a grounding strategy such as sitting in your car silently with the windows down, stretching, or placing your bare feet on a cool surface  to focus your body on the present moment.

  • FREEZE-Sometimes when we feel overwhelmed our mind can  FREEZE. Your mind can shut down,  go blank, and you feel STUCK. I tend to FREEZE when I feel overwhelmed with tasks and responsibilities. Try taking a nap to reset your mind, listing out your thoughts or feelings, or talking to someone to evaluate what you are experiencing the next time you desire to FREEZE.

Examine your patterns and ask others around you which responses represent you the most and prepare to activate these strategies in your life!
